Wyston Books, Inc. is named after William Whiston (1667-1752), a clergyman who succeeded Newton as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics in 1703. His independent but unpopular views, that Bible stories could be explained scientifically as reflecting historical events and questioning the doctrine of the Trinity, caused conflict with church authorities. His career ended in the poverty that it began, being forced to live off income from a small farm and giving lectures on science in coffee houses. Late in life he left the Church of England and joined the Baptists. His publications were religious and mathematical in nature.
