Wyston Books, Inc. is named after William Whiston (1667-1752), a clergyman who succeeded Newton as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics in 1703. His independent unpopular views (that biblical stories could be explained scientifically as reflecting historical events, questioning the doctrine of the Trinity) caused conflict with authorities and his career ended in the poverty it began: being forced to live off income from a small farm, by lecturing on science in coffee houses, and by attempting solution of the longitude. Late in life he left the Church of England and joined the Baptists. His publications were religious and mathematical.
